Make Your Message Viral

Category: Blog (all posts),Branding,Latest News,Social Media Marketing | Comments Off

Everyone likely remembers “that” link that was sent to them with a “Check This Out!” tagline: whatever YouTube video or article that was sweeping the web http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9oxmRT2YWw. It was probably on the morning shows, text and emailed to millions of friends, and an online search trend to boot. Whatever “it” was, it was viral; the most coveted of social media monikers for anyone who is attempting to get their image, message, or story across to as many viewers as possible. Was it just luck or lightning in a bottle though?

The truth is there are identifiable aspects to what makes something go viral on the web. Categorically, if something is viral, it usually exemplifies a series of traits. Those traits can generally be identified as being funny, amazing, controversial, or just plain helpful. With the amount of noise and nonsense that exists on the web, public viewer-ship and interest generally eliminates quickly that which fails to excite any one of those categories, meaning, if it is truly funny people will look at it and if it is truly helpful people will share it. Furthermore, even if your message has that “amazing” factor, it still needs a little extra edge. Always attempt to get your message to the right audience first. If it is an email blast of a baby laughing to a series of friends, well you’ve found a good audience because you know they’ll watch it and likely share it. The same goes for that helpful tip on how to pay for your child’s college education; make sure you reach your demographic of parents with college-aged children.

So remember, lightning and instant Internet fame can be caught in a bottle. The bottom line is, if you are attempting to get your message across to as many eyes and ears as possible, nothing is more important than making sure your message meets that identifiable criteria and your primary audience receives it first. And whatever that message or advertisement may be, a cute, laughing baby sure doesn’t hurt either.

Understanding Social Media to Increase Profit Opportunities

Category: Blog (all posts),Branding,Social Media Marketing | Comments Off Understanding Social Media to Increase Profit Opportunities

Entrepreneurs and business people alike, all share a common goal: making a profit. The ways in which they reach their profit goals however, can often vary widely, depending on their business practices, knowledge, and especially marketing acumen. Most brands and companies understand the ability to affect revenue and profit from a traditional media perspective (i.e. – T.V., radio, print, and web advertising), however it is also important to understand the new role of social media (i.e. – Facebook, Twitter, site blogs, etc.) in affecting profit opportunities. Accounting for social media is quickly becoming a “must do” for all businesses big and small.

Social media offers a powerful communication tool to reach consumers and affect profit generation in that social media is a group of unique broadcast mediums with the ability to have effective feedback provided as an immediate return. As a company or a brand, the advantage of social media to engage your consumer base in an informal setting is invaluable. With greater engagement and the idea of connecting one on one with a consumer, comes greater loyalty, and greater loyalty to a brand or product can increase profit opportunities.

When companies and brands listen for their consumers needs, the response is generally positive, with consumers providing helpful direction in how to promote products, improve ideas, and increase exposure. Moreover, an often overlooked advantage that listening through social media brings to the table is limiting brand damage and potential setbacks. The direct, immediate feedback that brands can receive through social media can often times put out fires before they even start. Consumers are more than willing to be engaged through social media, and if a brand is willing to listen, engage, and offer what the consumer has requested, then profit opportunities will abound.

Establishing Your Small Business Voice

Category: Blog (all posts),Branding,Social Media Marketing | Comments Off Establishing Your Small Business Voice

In today’s enormous media environment, it is more important than ever to find your voice for your small business. With the tremendous amount of noise that already exists in every market, it can seem overwhelming. As Steve Rubel, EVP of Global Strategy and Insights for Edelman, recently reaffirmed, “More content will be created today than existed in entirety before 2003”, so time limitations and information overload are more likely than ever . Start-ups and other small businesses who are looking to grow should make every attempt to find that voice with the blossoming and legitimized social media universe with the likes of niche blogs, microblogs (Twitter), and structured social networks like Facebook.

Social media blogging and its networks offer that voice for your small business or start-up that might otherwise be lost in the din of the digital world. Social media can allow you to gain popularity within your niche, attract loyal customers and followers, establish a brand awareness, and in turn boost sales and profits. Most importantly, it allows you to speak directly to your target audience without confusing your message through secondary sources. But just getting on Twitter and saying “Hi” isn’t going to get it done, so what will work?

The key to establishing that successful blog, Twitter post, or Facebook page is not a simple one step process, or a magic key word. The key is devoting time and patience to the practice, allowing your message to be out there and feeding it to grow organically, with the aid of promoting your unique message, or new or inventive product you might have, or even a thoughtful story that might share your experiences with that niche you are looking to connect with. All of these ideas and practices require attention to detail, a time commitment, and often a guiding hand. The great news is that the tools are out there, and you can start forming your small business or start-up’s voice today!

How Google Works

Category: Blog (all posts),Search Engine Optimization | Comments Off How Google Works

It’s an exciting feeling when your website goes live. You play around with the navigation roll-overs, read over your copy again and again thinking “okay that’s good,” and test out your contact form. Then, likely, the next step you do is Google yourself. Then your heart drops, “Where’s my site?!”

I always get that phone call or email after a client’s site goes live and proceed to explain how Google works.

The basics of Google is  simple: Google sends out robots or “bots” to comb a webpage/website for content, they then send the information back to Google who then uses their top-secret algorithm to return the best search results for their visitors.

Much of this algorithm isn’t so secret, like PageRank, which is how Google evaluates the importance of a site. If a site has a lot of pages linking to it, and vice-versa, then Google thinks it must be popular. That being said, Google then looks at the content of the page, your text, for keywords to get a sense of what the site is about.

If you have WordPress, install the plugin All in One SEO Pack and give Google a hand by specifying your keywords and descriptions for your posts and pages. If you have an e-commerce site like Magento, this is listed as the “Meta Info” tab on your products and pages. We’ll be posting more about how to optimize with keywords and descriptions in the coming weeks on our blog.

“But” you say, “I’m Googling my name, and its all over my page (or in my domain name). Surely, Google would show my site as the top result.” In response, I say, if you site has just gone live, give it time. It may take up to a week for your site to show up and index with Google. You can speed up the process by submitting your site to Google, placing Google Analytics on your website, and listing your business with Google Place for Business.

WordPress.com verses WordPress self-hosted

Category: Blog (all posts) | Comments Off WordPress.com verses WordPress self-hosted

WordPress is an amazing platform for building a website. But many of my clients get confused because they see WordPress.com and WordPress.org. They are quick to setup a free account on WordPress.com without realizing the great differences between the two:

WordPress.com

WordPress.com is a hosted blogging service. Sites hosted at WordPress.com are located at URLs like “yoursite.wordpress.com” and are largely used only for blogs. Overall, you have less control, can’t use any of the wide array of plugins that makes the “real” WordPress great, and cannot deliver your own advertising.

I also stress to my clients who have WordPress.com based blogs, that although you think you’re saving money and getting it up quick, your files and content are still on someone else’s hosting server. In addition, you still end up paying money in the end to map your domain if you don’t want the standard “yoursite.wordpress.com” or want to edit the CSS files to change the design.

WordPress.org (the real WordPress)

This “real” WordPress to which WordPress.org is dedicated, is where you download the latest version files, which you then upload to your website. (For most web hosting plans, this is also a one click process through your control panel – GoDaddy, Bluehost, etc).  You (and us as a designer) have absolute and total control of your site, for use on your own servers, with no usage restrictions at all.

So! We hope this clears things up. No need to worry if you’ve setup a WordPress.com blog and want to change it to a self-hosted WordPress. It is a very simple process. WordPress.com has an article for that located here: http://en.support.wordpress.com/moving-a-blog/
